Tiny sketches have always been a part of my process. People have commented on the unusually large number of sketches I generate for each project. It’s a very free flowing process and I build off earlier sketches and begin to see new opportunities as they unfold. I have found that if an idea can stand as a tiny sketch then it already has some of the primary elements of a strong form- easy to recognize and memorable- The word iconic is overused and has lost its meaning, but I still believe in its basic power to connect. Not all iconic designs are good, but most good designs are iconic.
This site was set up to share work done primarily in the early phases of a design- when the product can be anything. I’m always inspired seeing the early work of a designer and watching the idea unfold as well as seeing all the avenues it could have taken instead. As the site evolved it started to focus on the entire process. I’m a Principal designer with Continuum in its Boston office, and many of the projects on this site are things that I had a significant role in while at Continuum. Prior to Continuum, I worked as a designer at Philips Corporate Design in the Netherlands and I also spent a few years in a small design office called Altitude. A few of the projects are also things that I had an interest in developing on my own.
